The Enzyme Education Institute™ is committed to the collection and sharing of knowledge regarding the various processes that enzymes facilitate in the body.
What Are Enzymes?
Enzymes are catalysts and are necessary for all functions of living cells via initiation and acceleration of biochemical reactions. Enzymes are structure-specific so that they will only work with substances that fit their active site. Enzymes are also condition-specific, working optimally at certain pH levels and within given temperature ranges.
Enzymes are necessary for life and enzyme supplements can play an important role in maintaining a healthy active life. There are many different types of enzyme products including digestive, antioxidant and systemic supplements. Enzyme supplements are commonly found in the form of capsules, tablets, chewable tablets or powders.
Our bodies require digestive enzymes to break down the foods we eat into the nutrients we can absorb. Enzymes are available throughout the digestive tract from the mouth to the small intestine. While our bodies produce enzymes, we don’t produce enough digestive enzymes to fully digest our foods.
